WELCOME TO OUR CAREER SPOTLIGHT SERIES – NOVEMBER
⁠In this month’s Career Spotlight, we managed to dig down and chat with the extremely passionate guy, with his feet planted on the ground (to be precise with his career as well), Joshua Turner. Since Joshua was a kid he knew that Geology was his call in life, as he loves the earth and the history behind it. Joshua is a hard worker and even though he feels lucky under the circumstances of COVID-19, he managed to adapt well under the new routines that were put in place in his profession. Read on to learn more about Joshua.
  1. Can you tell me a bit about what you do for work and what you enjoy most about your job?
I’m a qualified Geologist with experience working in Geotechnical Consulting and Construction Materials Testing. What I love most about my work is the diversity of what I do, no two days are the same and get the opportunity to work on some exciting projects throughout Australia.
  1. What is a typical day like?
A typical day might look like getting up early, attending a site visit, followed by coming back to the office to do some reports, emails and phone calls, and finishing the day with some meetings. When I go to the site I’m taking soil/rock samples and conducting assessments on the ground and subsurface conditions. I also conduct testing in the field or on these samples back at a laboratory. From there, I use these site assessments and testing results to make recommendations to clients in reports about how to construct things like building pad and roads and whether they are meeting project specifications. Sometimes I’ll spend several days or weeks away visiting other company facilities or working on a project.
  1. How has your role /industry been impacted by COVID-19? And how have you adapted?
Things certainly changed a lot when lockdown hit, everyone was working remotely which was a big change not going to site or being around people in an office. I think we were lucky because many projects were still going throughout the worst of the lockdown, so we still had plenty of work in the pipeline. But it’s certainly changed the way we work.
  1. What was your path to working in this profession?
This might sound cliched, but Geology is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid. I love Earth and understanding how all the intricate Geological processes that take millions of years have formed the planet we know today. There’s more to it than just rocks!
  1. Do you need any qualifications to do what you do? If so, what are they?
If you’re looking to become a Geologist, then a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Geology is required. From there you can choose what you want to branch out into whether it be research, exploration, engineering geology or much more!
  1. What is the best career advice someone has given you?
It’s not necessarily careered advice, but something I’ve had many people say to me over the years is that if you’re passionate about what you do, and you follow your heart, you’ll enjoy what you do so much more. Be courageous and follow your gut. You never know what amazing opportunities lie ahead!
  1. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into this profession?
Just give it a go and remember it’s never too late to start! Something I love about this profession is the diversity of people I’ve studied and worked with. Geological Sciences is a profession for anyone, no matter what stage of life you’re at. If you’d like to know a bit more, do some research, Geology forms the basis for many other areas of study such as Archaeology and Palaeontology, or could lead to work in Resources & Exploration, Engineering, Government and more!
